Jan Evangelista Purkyně (1787-1869) was a prominent Czech scientist and physician who became famous not only in the field of medicine, but also in biology, physiology and anatomy. He is considered one of the most important Czech scientists of the 19th century and was internationally renowned in his time. Purkyně was also involved in politics and was strongly connected with the national and cultural interests of the Czech nation. His research and discoveries had a huge impact on scientific progress and he is therefore considered one of the key founders of modern scientific medicine and biology.
